In recent years, God has placed a different emphasis about the importance of Christmas on my heart. Last year it was the fact that no other gift will ever compare to the gift that is Jesus Christ. It was on my mind all season. This Christmas God has taken this emphasis to a new level; it leaves me in awe and teary eyed. Y’all, God came to earth 2,000 years ago. I’m sure you sitting there thinking ‘Alex, we know this. That is what Christmas is all about.’ See I thought the same thing, until I started to look into what exactly Jesus gave up as he departed heaven to come down to earth to save us.
Heaven is defined as a place of perfect happiness and eternal communion with God. There aren’t a lot of pointers of what heaven will look like but the Bible does give us a few hints of what it will be like:
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:20
“He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth.” Isaiah 25:8
“Then he sad ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:42-43
“Then I heard a voice from heaven say ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” Revelation 14:13
In heaven, there is no pain, suffering, sorrowful tears, there are no thieves, injustice, heartache, wrongful laboring. Jesus describes heaven as paradise! He literally left paradise to come to earth. A place full of selfishness, injustice, evil desire’s, sorrow, a lonely, cruel, and sin tainted world. Just take a second to reflect on that.
God left everything in a perfect heaven to be with us.
In our world today it makes no sense for a person to do this; why would the God and Creator of the world do such a crazy thing?! Love. We are so wanted by God to the point that he decided to come to us! He left his perfectly comfortable home to be with us and show how great His love is for us. You know the saying actions speak louder than words; well God didn’t just talk the talk about how dearly He loved us, He put his words into action! Praise the Lord!
I am forever grateful for this humble, bold move our God took for us. In the days leading up to Christmas day, I pray we all let the impact and how massive this date in history is sink into our hearts and shine the light of Jesus for everyone to see.
